Best Use Of An Old Frostop Mug EVER! The Krewe of Froth

I have always wondered what happened to many of the giant mugs that once adorned Frostops across the country. I got my answer to at least one of the old mugs. Just this week pictures of a Frostop mug that has been incorporated into a St. Patrick's Day float in Mississippi were posted on our LaPlace Frostop Facebook page by Harry Clark. I asked about them and he told me that it is part of the Krewe of Froth and that they even have a Facebook page. I ended up exchanging emails with Jimmy Reid of the Krewe of Froth and found out about how the old mug came to be used on a float.

According to Jimmy Reid, his Dad decided to put a float in the Jackson, Mississippi Mal's St. Paddy's Parade in 1983. In the late 1980's, his Dad was driving down a country road and saw the mug laying on its side on the side of the road. He stopped at the closest farm and asked who owned the mug. The owner of the farm said he got it when they were tearing down the Frostop that was in Jackson, Mississippi. The only thing he had wanted was the motor out of it. Jimmy's Dad bought it from him for $100! His Dad brought it home and beat the dents out of the mug, cut a door in it, and built a second floor with a trap door. They had the their float icon and became the Krewe of Froth! The mug has been repainted over the years and he is not sure when ROOT BEER was painted over, making it easier to paint. A bathroom was added to the mug about 20 years ago. Every year the parade has a different theme and they adjust the mug to fit the theme. The mug has been a garbage can, oil can, coffee mug, and a space ship (twice) just to name a few. This will be the 30th year his family has done the parade. This will mark the first time they also do the Hattiesburg, MS Mardi Gras parade also. You can check out some video of the Krewe of Froth in action on Youtube.

On January 27, 2012 Betty Davis became a Louisiana Restaurant Association Legend's Award recipient. The LRA recognizes the long-term dedication of employees who make up the backbone of our industry by presenting them with this award. To qualify an employee must be nominated by an LRA member, have worked at the member restaurant for at least 20 years, and personify exemplary service and dedication.

Betty Davis, more than qualifies! She has worked at the LaPlace Frostop for almost 26 years. She is a stellar example of service and dedication. Betty is not just an employee she is part of our LaPlace Frostop family!

Although Betty came to work with us in 1986, her first job in 1963 was here at the LaPlace Frostop for Wayne Kendrick. She would work here until 1966 when Wayne Kendrick moved to the Frostop on Government St. in Baton Rouge, LA. She helped him out for a few weeks in Baton Rouge! After leaving Frostop, she worked at several iconic LaPlace landmarks that are now long gone. LaPlace Coffee Shop, Tarpon Seafood & Steak House, and Airline Motors. She returned to the LaPlace Frostop on April 26, 1986 and has been with us ever since!

Betty isn't just a dedicated and hard worker she is in our opinion one of the BEST cooks in the River Parishes! Through the years Betty has been responsible for our homemade chili, bbq, and gravy. The dishes she is best known for are the Chicken & Andouille Gumbo, Red Beans & Rice, and the Catfish & Shrimp Supreme. Congratulations Betty! You have always been a legend to us - this just made it official!

Ted's Frostop in New Orleans is undergoing some great changes lately. One of the few iconic Frostops left in the country, Ted's Frostop is getting a makeover.

First a little background on Frostop. It was started in 1926, by L.S. Harvey in Springfield, OH. Word spread about the success of the delicious creamy root beer and the stands spread across the country. During World War II, the expansion slowed due to shortages of building materials and equipment, as well as the flavors and sweetening agents necessary in the manufacture of Frostop root beer. After the war, under new aggressive ownership in the 1950's, Frostop experienced tremendous growth during the post war boom years of the drive-in era. The signature brown and yellow, neon lit stands, with their gigantic, revolving root beer mug on top, dotted the countryside and became a favorite place to rest and enjoy an icy cold frosted mug of Frostop root beer.

It was during this expansion in the 1950's that Ted's Frostop opened in New Orleans. The Ted of Ted's Frostop - Ted Sternberg at one time operated more Frostops than any other single operator. The 1950's & 1960's were a great time for Frostop. However, by the 1970's many locations closed across the country and by the early 1980's the chain folded. At that time, all Frostops left became independent. During the 1980's Ted's had locations in the Jax Brewery and in the Elmwood food court in addition to the location on Calhoun St. By the 1990's, those additional locations would be closed. Ted's Frostop would become one of only 14 independent Frostops left across the country at the time that Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. The storm would close Ted's Frostop until 2006 and change its iconic mug. The gigantic mug was toppled from its pole and ended up upside down in the parking lot. When the restaurant reopened it decided to leave it upside down and fix it up. The upside down mug became the locations trademark on menus and shirts. It was a reminder of what had happened and of the resilience of NOLA. The restaurant which by this time had been sold by Ted would be sold once again in the years following the storm. Then came 2011.

In the fall of 2011, Pete Moss and a group of New Orleanians, decided to buy Ted's Frostop. They wanted to return Ted's Frostop to its glory days. In the months that have followed their purchase, the restaurant has undergone a renaissance. The dining room has been painted and pictures of other Frostops and memorabilia adorn the walls. They have revamped the menu now making the signature Lot-O-Burger with ground chuck. The all important original Frostop Root Beer is back and served in a frozen mug. And speaking of mugs, the mug that was knocked down for Katrina has been restored to the top of the pole. It once again spins and lights up the New Orleans sky with beautiful neon. According to an article in Gambit, Pete Moss said a renaissance is happening at Ted's. Indeed this is exactly what is happening at Ted's Frostop. They are getting some well deserved attention for their efforts to bring the iconic drive-in back, with the article in Gambit and a segment on ABC 26. I see a bright, beautiful, neon lit future ahead for Ted's Frostop! A big Frostop thank you to Pete Moss and group for making this happen! A Look Back at 2011 for the LaPlace Frostop

As the year 2011 comes to an end, we would like to look back at the great year it was for the LaPlace Frostop.

Our ever expanding menu expanded a bit more in 2o11. New items added to our menu included: Hamburger Steak Poboy, Fried Chicken Salad, Fried Green Tomatoes topped with Crawfish Monica, and Crawfish Monica Pasta. The Fried Green Tomatoes topped with Crawfish Monica was the hit of the year.

One of our biggest stories from 2010 was the episode of Memphis Beat we were in. In 2011 Memphis Beat would play a huge role again! In March we received a call that they wanted to do a photo shoot for season two at the LaPlace Frostop! It was an honor to host them on Saturday March 19, 2011. Photographer Justin Stephens took pictures of Jason Lee, Sam Hennings, Alfre Woodard, DJ Qualls, & Leonard Earl Howze for promotional shots for TNT.

The cast and crew were a joy to host. DJ Qualls and Leonard Earl Howze stopped several times during the Spring to pick up lunch. They really are terrific guys. DJ liked the onion rings so much he tweeted about them!

In April, our head cook Betty Davis celebrated 25 years with us. It has been an pleasure and honor to work with her all these years. We all look forward to many more years working with her. She truly is one of the family.

We enjoyed a few DJ Saturdays in 2011. Our first scheduled in March was cancelled due to the Memphis Beat photo shoot. We ended up having the event in April, May, and June. A great time was had for all three.

We were honored to be chosen this year as the #2 restaurant in all of the River Parishes in the Times-Picayune Reader's Choice Poll.

This year brought the addition of Diet Frostop Root Beer to our drink selection. In working with the company that now owns the name Frostop that manufactures and distributes Frostop bottled root beer mainly in the Midwest, we were able to get Diet Root Beer made in South Louisiana. We are now distributing both Diet Frostop Root Beer and Regular Frostop Root Beer in 5 gallon bag-in-box to Ted's Frostop in New Orleans, Frostop in Greenville, MS, Bootsy's Ponchatoula, and Country Kitchen Gonzales. We look forward to expanding the number of restaurants it will be offered at in 2012.

The year 2011 was a great year for us at the LaPlace Frostop. We are so thankful to our many customers who have helped make our 53 years a success. We look forward to 2012 and our 54th year serving the River Parishes!

We are often asked many questions about Frostop. Questions such as tell us about the history, is there still a franchise, how many Frostops are left around the country, where did Frostop start, and do you still make the root beer. Hopefully we can answer all of these questions and give a few more Frostop facts for everyone.

Where did Frostop originate?

Contrary to what many people in the New Orleans area think, Frostop started in Springfield, Ohio in 1926. It was started by Mr. L.S. Harvey. Franchises then spread across the country.

Is there still a franchise There is NO more franchise. The franchise went out of business in the early 1980's. Those Frostops left across the country are independent. You will find a wide ranging difference in menus at those that are left.

Where did the concept of the giant mug come from?

The concept of the giant rotating mug actually came from T.W. Ganus. The giant mug was first used in New Orleans. It was copyrighted by Ganus to limit its use to Frostop operators. Do you still make the root beer?

Yes, we actually still make our homemade root beer at the LaPlace Frostop. Many of the other Frostops also make their own root beer. There is actually a company that now owns the Frostop name and bottles the original recipe of Frostop root beer. http://www.frostop.com/

It is Springtime so it must be time for DJ Saturday! Our 1st DJ Saturday of 2011 in March had to be cancelled for the Memphis Beat Photo Shoot, so that has given us more time to prepare for the April DJ Saturday. Our April DJ Saturday will be April 16th from 1-5pm.

Our DJ Saturday will now have a DJ Saturday winner every month for best car. The winner will receive a special plaque and a picture of the car will be featured in the next month's poster. If we have enough interest, we will do a plaque for motorcycles in the future. The winning motorcycle would also be featured in the poster.

Our April DJ Saturday will have a giveaway of tickets to the New Orleans Zephyrs vs Round Rock Express game that will be on Monday April 18 at 7pm. We will also bring back the Color The Mug for a cone that was so popular last year.

So join us for great tunes, delicious food, and good times at the LaPlace Frostop for our DJ Saturday!

Memphis Beat Photo Shoot at the LaPlace Frostop

We received an exciting call on Ash Wednesday from the folks with TNT's Memphis Beat. They were interested in using our LaPlace Frostop for a photo shoot for season 2 promotional shots. The date for the photo shoot happened to be the same day as our 1st DJ Saturday of 2011, March 19th. The DJ Saturday would have to be rescheduled for April since they would need the restaurant for the entire day.

The process for the photo shoot was very interesting. The crew for the photographer came the day before the shoot and set up for all of Saturdays shots. They marked off where all of the actors would stand. They knew exactly what the shots would be for the next day.

The first thing to arrive for the shoot on Saturday was the car that Jason Lee's character, Memphis Detective Dwight Hendricks drives. The GTO arrived along with two Memphis Police cars.

Soon after the arrival of the cars, the crew started to show up to get everything in place for the photo shoot.

After everything was in place, the five actors that would be in the photo shoot arrived.

The actors would be shot individually and then as a group for the promo shots.

The actors were Jason Lee (Detective Dwight Hendricks), Alfre Woodard (Lt. Tanya Rice), Sam Hennings (Detective Charlie White aka Whitehead), DJ Qualls (uniform cop), and Leonard Earl Howze (Detective Reginald Greenback).

A Look Back at 2010 for the LaPlace Frostop

The year 2010 started off the 52nd year for the LaPlace Frostop! As we look forward to 2011 and our 53rd year of serving the River Parishes, we look back at the year that was 2010.

The biggest news for our LaPlace Frostop in 2010 was the filming of a scene for TNT's new show Memphis Beat! The crew filmed on July 6th and the episode "I Shall Not Be Moved" aired on August 10th.

We started a new tradition with our 1st DJ Saturday in August. It is an event where everyone can enjoy great tunes, delicious food, and good times. It was a sucess and was followed with two more in October and November. It will return in March 2011.

New menu items were added this year - our BBQ Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Salsa Burger, and our Frostop Frenzy.

The year also brought us new friends to our Frostop family - the Riggen's Frostop of Chrisman, IL (built in 1954). Not long after we featured them in our blog, their Frostop had a devastating fire. We had a 50/50 raffle and through our local Frostop supporters helped to raise $340 to help them rebuild. They reopened in October to huge crowds.

In November we met Cathi Deever, daughter of CJ Pastor the first person to lease out and run the LaPlace Frostop from Morris Terry! She sent us a great picture of her Dad and brother in front of the LaPlace Frostop 1958.

In December, we were extremely honored by Navy CWO5 Michael Fontenot for presenting us with a flag flown over Bagram, Afghanistan 9-11-10. We can not begin to thank Michael enough for his service to our country.

The mug was knocked off of its pole during Hurricane Katrina. In true New Orleans fashion, life goes on, Ted's left the mug upside down and had it repainted. They now use the upside down mug as their logo. Ted's Frostop went so far as to put the upside down mug logo on their shirts!

The LaPlace Frostop made its debut on national television on August 10, 2010. The TNT television show, Memphis Beat, gave us our shot at the "big time". We were shown in the last five minutes of the eighth episode titled "I Shall Not Be Moved". The scene starts out with a shot of the mug rotating in all its glory!

They are discussing the case they are working on. Dwight receives a phone call from Sutton confirming that there was no rain in Fayetteville, Arkansas in the month of December 1958. Dwight and Lt. Rice talk about the case a bit more before getting up to leave ending the scene.

50/50 Raffle to Benefit in the Rebuilding of the Riggen's Frostop

The LaPlace Frostop will be having a 50/50 raffle this weekend at its DJ Saturday, August 7th from 2-6pm, to benefit the rebuilding of the Riggen's Frostop of Chrisman, Illinois. The Riggen's Frostop has been a part of the Chrisman community since 1954. The building was severely damaged by fire on the morning of June 29th.

Frostop Building Design and Patent

The first Frostop root beer stand was opened in 1926 by Mr. L.S. Harvey in Springfield, Ohio. Frostop stands spread throughout the country until the onset of World War II. During the war years, the expansion slowed due to shortages of building materials, equipment, etc.

Early Frostop design

After the war, the chain resumed expansion. It was during this time that T.W. Ganus opened the South's first Frostop in 1954. He used the slogan "Under the Sign of the Revolving Stein." Mr. Ganus copyrighted the the design of the building and mug to be used by Frostop operators across the country. His design used the unique replica of a frosted mug filled with root beer revolving atop the Frostop building. He sold the design and patent to Frostop to be used on a national scale.

The patent was #183,836 for combined beverage and food vending building. The application for the patent was made July 15, 1957 - serial #46,953. The patent date was November 4, 1958. The term was for 14 years.

In celebration of the beginning of summer, we would like to share some of our LaPlace Frostop homemade root beer facts!

Yes, we actually still make our homemade root beer at the restaurant. The root beer is made about every 10 days - giving us 5 tanks of the product. We serve approximately 180 tanks a year. That works out to 900 gallons or 115,200 ounces of root beer!!

Our root beer is available in a frozen mug or cups that come in 12, 16, 24, and 32 oz. It also is available in our 1/2 gallon containers. So try our delicious homemade root beer today! If you really want a great summer treat - try our root beer float.

Riggen's Frostop, Chrisman, Illinois

Next up in our series on Frostop's Across the United States is the Riggen's Frostop located in Chrisman, Illinois.

Part 2:

Riggen's Frostop Chrisman, IL The Frostop in Chrisman, Illinois was built in 1954 by E.O. Tate. Rena Riggen started working for Mr. Tate in 1955. In 1956, Rena and her husband Robert (Bob) Riggen, began leasing the Frostop from Mr. Tate. They leased the restaurant for three years, but in 1959, Mr. Tate sold the Frostop to Luther Vandevander. Rena stayed on and worked for him. Two years later, Rena and Bob bought the Frostop. Since 1961, the Frostop in Chrisman has been run by the Riggen family.

In the early 1990's, Rena & Bob's children took over the restaurant. Their children, Sue & Dave, now run the restaurant. Rena, now 88 years old, still works everyday part time. Robert Riggen sadly passed away in 2002 and his long time presence at the Frostop is missed everyday.

Dave Riggen The Riggen's Frostop still uses car hops and does not have indoor seating. The restaurant offers service to cars, picnic tables, and to go orders. The menu consists of hamburgers, hot dogs, BBQ sandwiches, catfish dinners, Italian beef dinners, ice cream, and of course the famous root beer in a frosty mug. New this year to the menu is pizza which is already a good seller.

The Frostop is seasonal and is open from mid March until mid October due to the COLD Midwestern winters. The Riggen's Frostop has been Chrisman's local landmark and hangout since it was built. The small town has a population of 1400 and in Chrisman, Frostop is "THE" place to be!

The Frostop celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2005 with a cruise in car show, a band, and they even had car hops both past and present. The celebration was enjoyed by all!

Huntington, West Virginia Frostop

This will be the first in what I hope to be a series on other Frostop from across the United States. With the few remaining Frostop scattered across the country, I thought it was important to document those that are left.

Part I:

Huntington Frostop

The Frostop in Huntington, West Virginia is co-owned by sisters Marilyn Murdock and Bing Murphy. Their father, Rupert McGinnis, and uncle, William Warnock, opened the business on May 29, 1959. The Frostop was run by McGinnis until his death in 1980 and then taken over by his wife until her death in 1996. The sisters took over ownership of the business at that time. They said they have learned quite a bit of the business from the employees - three of them have been with Frostop for over 25 years!

The Frostop building has remained true to its original design. The mug on the roof even still turns!

The Huntington Frostop serves many items typically found at drive-in restaurants. Burgers, BBQ pork sandwich, fried fish sandwich, french fries, onion rings, ice cream, shakes, and sundaes. The two signature items would be their root beer and hot dogs. The root beer is still served in a frosty mug as it should be. Huntington, WV is known for its Hot Dog Festival the Huntington Frostop is part of that hot dog tradition. The Frostop even sponsors the root beer chugging contest.

Many of the original items are still on our menu today. We still have the Lot-O-Burger. We still make our chili, bbq, and gravy. The grilled cheese, crab, and shrimp burgers are also still on the menu. The few items that didn't stay on the menu are the Sea Burger (Fish) and the old orange drink. The Butter Burger is our small burger but without the added butter.

Our current menu (shown below) has come a long way since the one shown above. We have added numerous items through the years to keep up with the changing taste buds of today's customers. We have retained the menu items that have stood the test of time.

LaPlace Frostop Dining Room Thru The Years.....

Building before the dining room was added

The LaPlace Frostop was built in 1958 strictly as a drive-in restaurant with no indoor seating. The dining room was added in 1962. Since the addition, the "patio" as we call it, has changed through the years as the building has been remodeled.

1973

The dining room in 1973 used the actual cinder block walls. The menu boards displayed in our dining room lasted until the mid 1980's. The picture above shows a jukebox as well as a fixture of the past, a cigarette machine.

Early 1980's

By the early 1980's, we had new tables and chairs, but the light fixtures remained the same. Joining the jukebox and cigarette machine was the newest invention Space Invaders!

After the remodeling in 1981

The remodeling in 1981 covered the original cinder block walls with plaster.

2005

The major remodeling in 1996 because of Formosan termites changed the dining room again. The plaster was removed and the cinder block walls were covered in stucco. We actually still use the tables from the early 1980's but the chairs were bought during the remodel of 1996. The lighting was finally changed out to fluorescent.

Since the early 1980's we have decorated our walls with some great local posters including Andouille Fest, Strawberry Fest, Crescent City Classic, and Pontchartrain Beach to name a few.

Our newest addition to the dining room is our LaPlace Frostop corner. It takes the place of what was our video poker area (1994-2008).

Soon, Frostop® stands spread throughout the nation until the onset of World War II. During the war, expansion was curtailed due to shortages of building materials and equipment, as well as the flavors and sweetening agents so necessary in the manufacture of Frostop® Root Beer.

After the war, Mr. Harvey, who was convinced that Frostop® was the finest root beer ever made, resumed expansion of the chain. Under new aggressive ownership in the 1950s, Frostop® experienced tremendous growth during the post war boom years of the drive-in era. The signature brown and yellow, neon lit stands, with their gigantic, revolving root beer mug on top, dotted the countryside and became a favorite place to rest and enjoy an icy cold frosted mug of Frostop®.

Root Beer Float Cupcake at the LaPlace Frostop

I thought I would try out something different this past weekend with our root beer - root beer float cupcakes! It was a delicious experiment so try out the recipe at home and enjoy!!

LaPlace Frostop Homemade Root Beer Float Cupcake

2 1/2 cups LaPlace Frostop Homemade Root Beer 1 tsp. root beer extract 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 2 cups Domino brown sugar 1 cup butter, softened 2 eggs 3 cups all purpose flour 1 Tbs. baking powder 2 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. salt

Root Beer Glaze

1/2 cup Domino confectioners’ sugar 3 tbsp LaPlace Frostop Homemade Root Beer Preheat oven to 350 F degrees. Prepare cupcake pan with paper cups. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt and set aside. Cream together the butter and Domino brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla extract, then beat until smooth. Add the flour mixture alternately with LaPlace Frostop Homemade Root Beer, beating well. Pour batter into cupcake pan, filling cups. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Cool cupcakes in pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to racks. Place a cookie sheet or towel under the racks. Make the glaze by mixing Domino confectioners’ sugar and LaPlace Homemade Root Beer until smooth. Right after you take the cupcakes out of the oven, pour one tablespoon of LaPlace Homemade Root Beer over each cupcake slowly. Allow root beer to soak in for a few minutes then pour a couple tablespoons of glaze over each cupcake while slightly warm. After the glaze sets up a bit, serve with a scoop of LaPlace Frostop soft serve vanilla or Kleinpeter vanilla ice cream.

The following article is taken from the March 18, 1981 River Parishes Sun article Business Person of the Week: Jim Toler, writen by Ellen Cooper.

When your bread and butter depends of hamburgers and french fries, you have to keep one step ahead of the lunch crowd.

Jim Toler, the owner of the Frostop Drive-In Restaurant on Airline Highway in LaPlace, had learned the ins and outs of the drive-in business by trial and error. A remodeling project on the restaurant is the latest attempt by Toler to keep up with his growing clientele.

Toler said recently the purpose of the remodeling which included enlarging the kitchen area, adding new cooking equipment and laying 2,000 square felt of Formica, was to accommodate a growing community. "It (the restaurant) was old and working us to death," Toler said. "This major renovation will help us to serve this community (LaPlace) as it grows." "Our customers enjoy a clean atmosphere. We put 2,000 square feet of Formica down in the kitchen area, even on the ceiling, because it's so easy to maintain and keep clean."

The restaurant has recently re-opened after being closed since Jan. 18. Toler says he has already noticed an increase in business.

"We had to re-learn the entire operation," he said. "So far, it has worked out well. We have enjoyed an increase in business since we re-opened."

Toler, who works at the restaurant seven days a week, said he and his manager, Elain DeBautte, made the decision together to make the renovations and bring in the new cooking equipment.

The original building of the restaurant was built in 1958. Previous owners added the dining room and office area.

Down through the years, however, the original Lot-O-Burger hamburger has remained. Toler said the serving of drinks in frozen mugs has also not changed. But, more menu items have been added in the years. The menu today includes hot dogs, po-boys, several types of sandwiches and dinners.

Toler says the full range of menu items accounts for the full range of people who frequent the restaurant. The menu suits the tastes from the very young to the adult one, he added.

Toler and his wife, Evelyn (Terry), have three daughters, Terry, 11, Tiffany, 7, and Tracey, 3.

Terry is already helping her father by busing tables. Evelyn lends a hand during the peak rush hours. Toler says the two youngest daughters don't help - not yet anyway.

The trend of the Toler family is to help in the restaurant business. But, the trend started much earlier than with Toler's children and wife.

Toler's late father-in-law, Morris Terry, built the original Frostop building in 1958 as an investment. Toler himself, as a South Carolina high school student, helped his father run a small country drive-in. "Really, I just helped cook the hamburger and eat them", he said.

Since taking the Frostop Drive-In over seven years ago, the business has tripled, Toler said.

Toler must have learned more than just cooking and eating hamburgers at his father's drive-in. Somewhere, he learned how to sell them.

1996 - The Summer of the Termite....

The following article details the Formosan termites that almost ate our LaPlace Frostop down in the summer of 1996!

Thomas Rome Builders is rebuilding the roof and exterior after ripping out the damaged wood. The infestation is the only confirmed case in St. John the Baptist Parish.

Dinner is Bug Dinner

Formosan termites are eating in - in St. John the Baptist Parish.

The same pests that are threatening New Orlean's homes and treasured live oaks have been biting big chunks out of a LaPlace landmark, The Frostop Drive-In Restaurant, a fixture on East Airline Highway since 1958.

"They're hungry little buggers," said Larry Brock, St. John Cooperative Extension Agent.

Workers found a termite next bigger than a football next to the main wooden beam in the Frostop's ceiling this week.

"It's scaring the hell out of me to see what they're doing to our buildings," Frostop owner Jim Toler said.

Contractor Thomas Rome Jr. grabbed some splintered wood from the infested beam Wednesday and sifted it through his fingers like sand. "It was just shredded," he said.

Brock said the Frostop infestation is the only confirmed case of Formosan termites in the parish, but he added that homeowners could have come across them and handled the problem without notifying him.

Experts say Formosan termites, a subterranean termite native to East Asia, arrived in New Orleans after World War II as stowaways on military ships. The annual swarm lasts from May through June, with colonies averaging 2 million to 5 million termites.

In some New Orleans neighborhoods, as many as 95 percent of the live oaks are infested, and Formosan termites have infested the French Quarter and taken up residence in home around the city.

"Being that most of our buildings, as opposed to the French Quarter, are single dwellings is to our advantage," Brock said. And because subdivision regulations require builders to chemically treat properties before construction, it's less likely to find Formosan termites in newer homes.

Subterranean termites have been around "for eons," Brock said, but they are easier to control because they don't reproduce as quickly as Formosan termites and don't store moisture as efficiently.

And, Brock said, the Formosan termites aren't as picky about their food as subterranean termites.

And they found plenty of food at the Frostop.

By the time Toler had discovered the damage, it was too late - the termites had eaten away at the beam and walls. Now workers have to remove all the decking and reframe the roof.

Rome said they'll replace the wood with a metal roof.

Fortunately, the giant, tilted root beer mug adorned with neon has been spared. It remains on its perch above Airline Highway. The restaurant will be closed while the work is done and is expected to reopen next month.

Frostop Root Beer Update!

In an update to our blog about Frostop Root Beer, I was able to obtain a few bottles of the bottled brand for a side by side taste test with our homemade LaPlace Frostop Root Beer. The results are now in after an afternoon of joyfully tasting two very good root beers! There is a definite similarity in the two root beers. As you can see in the above picture the Frostop Root Beer in the bottle is in the mug on the left, had an incredible head of foam. It surely lived up to its slogan of "Nothing Tops it...but the foam!

I can only assume the difference comes from a change in concentrate available to us through the years since Frostop as a chain ceased operation in the early 1980's. We have maintained our recipe through the years but no longer have the concentrate from years ago. There probably is a difference in changes that occur when taking a product from homemade to one that is bottled for mass consumption such as the use of preservatives for shelf life.

I of course love our homemade LaPlace Frostop root beer, since I have been drinking it since I was 3 years old, but if given the opportunity to buy a bottled root beer at the store I would choose the Frostop Brand bottled root beer over all others! Hopefully, one day it will be available in stores in South Louisiana.

I would also like to thank Frostop root beer for being so kind as to send me a few bottles of their root beer (plastic and glass), diet root beer, and their Vanilla Caramel Creme soda. All the products were great. My favorite was the Frostop in the glass bottle!

They were also kind enough to send along a great Frostop mug, glass, buttons, table tents, and a folder full of Frostop pictures and information. The most incredible and generous thing sent was an actual Frostop root beer tap for our recently restored wooden root beer barrel which is on display in our dining room. I would like to thank Daniel Meyers of Frostop and Frank Agin who helped make this possible. I give you two mugs up for your Frostop Root Beer and thank y'all for helping to keep the Frostop name alive. Perhaps one day they will make it down to south Louisiana with their "Mobile Thirst Aid Unit", would love to see it in person! To see a slideshow of some of the great pictures they sent click below!

The LaPlace Frostop celebrated its 35th anniversary Saturday August 28, 1993 from 1-5pm. The day included a live broadcast on KHOM 104.1 with the DJ Dan McKay who ran events such a hulahoop contest for giveaways such as Frostop frisbees, coozies, and pens. In addition to the giveaways, there was special pricing with 99 cent Lot-O-Burgers and 35 cent soft drinks. The celebration was a great success!

The mug received its first minor renovation in 1987, scaffolding was erected and the neon was taken off. Mugs Coleman, a local man, did some minor repairs to the metal and then repainted it. The neon was put back on and we had the rotation repaired by Brightway Signs and then put the mugs rotation and neon maintenance under contract with them.

Cruise In Car Shows Fall of 2007

Several years ago we received an original Frostop wooden root beer barrel from a man that used to repair them for Frostop's. He clearly had it stored in the back of a garage or something so it wasn't in the best shape, so he was more than willing to let us take it off of his hands. Well we put in the back of our outside boat shed and let it sit for a few more years. This past May I finally decided it was time to do something with the old barrel. I decided to clean it up and display it in our dining room at the LaPlace Frostop. There was now a corner in our dining room that we had made into our Frostop memorabilia area.

The picture above shows the terrible shape the barrel was in. At some point in its history someone had painted varnish over the 8 metal bands. I can only assume that where it was stored for many years someone spray painted near it without covering it. All of that need to be cleaned up in order to display the barrel. The restoration would be more time consuming than I thought! I got some goof off and removed the spray paint and cleaned up the wood. The hard part was cleaning the metal bands. With the help of a Dremel and sander along with the goof off, I was finally able to clean up the bands one band at a time - each band taking me about an hour to clean! After the top bands were done, I flipped it over to clean the 4 bands at the bottom. The top was spray painted with a few coats and then it was time to bring it to the LaPlace Frostop.

At this point the barrel needs a logo for the front, a tap, and a stand ......

T.W. Ganus - Frostop Success Story

The year was 1931, a depression year. A 15 year old boy, fresh from the farm, arrived in New Orleans to work in a Drive-In owned by an older brother. This A&G Drive-In represented an investment of only $1800. This is how T.W. Ganus got his start in the food business.

The next 15 years saw this $1800 Drive-In grow into one of the South's largest restaurant chains, and T.W. Ganus from a dish washer to the position of Executive Vice President and Personal Director of A&G. In 1946, he left to establish a wholesale food and catering business in Indianapolis, Indiana. He returned to New Orleans in time to get in on the booming soft ice cream business.

The J. Hungerford Smith Company representative approached Ganus with the idea of opening a Frostop Drive-In. With typical foresight, he saw an opportunity with many areas for growth. In the Fall of 1954 Ganus opened the South's first Frostop Drive-In., under the "sign of the revolving stein", with his younger brother Melvin, as managing partner.

With the goal of year round operation, Ganus felt that a good food program was needed and a limited menu of high quality sandwiches was selected. This called for some changes in the building and equipment plans. The result was a new design of both the building and equipment to allow for fast service and high quality. Customers came from all parts of New Orleans to the self service windows to enjoy the Frostop Root Beer and the quality Frostop menu.

The perfecting of formulas and the copyrighting of the trade names has enabled Frostop operators to enjoy exclusive use of the highest quality products. The first item copyrighted was the Lot-O-Burger and later the Butterburger. These are available only to Frostop operators.

The sucess of the first Frostop attracted much interest. The second unit was opened on the opposite side of town. Now operated by Hugh Wyatt, he has guided its growth from $3000 monthly sales to $15,000. The recent addition of an enclosed seating area for 70 customers has enhanced his operation. Hugh is completing plans for his second Frostop to be opened soon.

C.A. Cox opened his Frostop in Kenner on the Airline Highway. for many years the Kenner Frostop had only outside window service and a reputation for good products. the recent air-conditioned enclosed dining area he built gives him both inside and outside traffic. Cox and Ganus opened two stores together in Algiers and Westwego.

Ralph Gall opened a store in Eunice, Louisiana, and another in Lafayette, Louisiana, and nearly exhausted himself trying to spend as much time in each store as possible. Ralph sold the Eunice Frostop to Mrs. Helen Doty and the Lafayette Frostop to Paul Newman. He then built his store on St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, into one of the highest volume Frostops in the area. He is building two more Frostops in new shopping centers to open in two or three months.

Ted Sternberg a jet pilot in the Korean conflict, became interested and opened a Frostop near a shopping center in East New Orleans. This was the beginning of several that now total four in New Orleans and, with partner Dick Sitton, three more in Little Rock, Arkansas. With a total of seven stores, Ted is running more Frostops than any other single operator.

The identity of the Frostops has been made quick and easy by the use of the revolving stein sign. This unique replica of a frosted mug filled with Root Beer, revolving atop the Frostop building and catching the eyes of passing motorists as it turns on a pole near the street,, has become a landmark all over the country. First used in the New Orleans area, it rapidly caught on. It was copyrighted by Ganus to limit its use to Frostop operators. Copyrighted designs and patents were sold to Frostop to be used on a national scale.

By this time inquiries were coming in from other cities and states. Frostop Drive-In's were opened in several cities in surronding areas. Frostops now in operation in Louisisana are: Lloyd Bearden, three Drive-Ins in Baton Rouge; LeRoy Lunceford, Raceland ad Thibodeaux; Hebron Leblanc, Gretna, George Reynolds, two Drive-In's in New Orleans; Bill Wahl, Algiers, Westwego, and New Orleans; Emile Martin, Harahan; Milton Fogg, Slidell; Marion Johnson, Shreveport; Wayne Kendricks, LaPlace; Rudy Kirns, Mandeville; Alva Dukes, Bogulusa; Louis Sanders, West Monroe; William McKee, New Iberia; Gaston Wilson, Morgan City and Houma; Mrs. Helen Doty, Eunice; and Paul Newman, Lafayette. As this issue goes to press five new Frostops are going in - two in New Orleans, one in Chalmette, one in Crowley and one in Batesville, Miss.

Due to his success in Louisiana and his proximity to the area, the Frostop management encouraged Mr. Ganus to become distributor in Mississippi. Mrs. Keller operates in Picayune; Dick and Ed Ward in Hattiesburg; Ray McPhail in Laurel; Jack Capelle in Greenwood; Charles Weeks in Greenville; and John Wilson operates two Frostops in Jackson. Mr. Ganus also distributes to two stores in Florida- Guy Hamilton in Jacksonville and Mr. Alumbaugh in Bradenton.

From the first store opening Ganus us sought better equipment and methods of production. Asked what he believed was the most important factor in the success of his distributorship, Ganus stated that to be successful a store must serve the finest products available, render quick and courteous service and the store and its employees remain spotlessly clean at all times. He stated further that no store ever failed to make a success when this formula is applied.

In December 1959, Ganus became president of Frostop Products Inc. and directed the national franchising Company from headquarters in New Orleans. During this time, the first Frostop outside the U.S.A. was opened in Winnipeg, Canada. the northwest states were opened and new Frostops sprang up. Traveling all over the United Sates took a great deal of his time, and in January of 1962, Ganus, with a desire to devote more time to his own distributorship, returned the national management of Frostop to the J. Hungerford Smith Company.

Since then Ganus has devoted his time to upgrading the Frostops in his area. Jim Faull, who had for the past three years managed three Frostop Drive-Ins, joined Ganus in May, 1963, with the purpose of aiding Frostop operations in the area in every possible way.

LaPlace Frostop Mug Restoration 2007

On Saturday August 25, 2007, the LaPlace Frostop mug came down to receive a complete makeover. The crew from American Sign Maintenance showed up bright and early on that Saturday morning to take the mug down from its home on the pole. The mug was taken down and then fitted with a base for the transfer to Hahnville, Louisiana. After the mug was welded to a base it was picked up and put on a trailer for the ride across the river. It was hard watching it drive away. It was easy to see once the mug was closer to eye level just what kind of shape the mug was in - and that was terrible. Almost 50 years of exposure to the elements had really done the metal skin in! The old mug sure was rusty. It would be in for an "extreme" makeover mug style.

Once the mug made it to Hahnville, it was time to take off the neon to be reused and strip away the VERY rusted sheet metal. The fiberglass foam and handle was to be saved to use again. The new aluminum would go on the inside skeleton which would also be reused. American Sign was e-mailing us pictures to keep us updated on our mugs progress. When we got the above picture we were all a bit sad. Even though we knew the mug was in terrible shape, to see the old skin crumpled on the ground was depressing!

The new aluminum skin went on the frame and the new mug took shape.

As the pictures kept coming by e-mail we could see our new mug really starting to take on the right look.

By the time we saw this picture we knew the mug was going to look outstanding. We decided to check the mug out in person and drove across the river to Hahnville to see all the details in person. We actually had them paint in a bit more detail such as the droplets going down the mug. When we got this picture we knew it wouldn't be long before the mug would be coming home!

The mug returned on Friday October 5, 2007!

We celebrated the following Saturday October 13, 2007 with a car show and DJ to commemorate the "Return of the Mug"!

As an answer to a question that is often asked of us at the LaPlace Frostop, YES there is already someone bottling Frostop Root Beer! We are anxious to try it out and see how much it tastes like our homemade LaPlace Frostop root beer!

LaPlace Frostop 1958

The original look of the LaPlace Frostop 1958. The mug would be moved to a pole out front in the early 1960's. The mug and building would also have neon added in the 60's. The dining room as well as storage areas and the office would be added later on also.

The above picture was taken after the 1981 remodeling. The original tile has been covered over with red wood.

LaPlace Frostop 1996

The above picture is from the summer of 1996. Formosan termites had destroyed the roof as well as all of the walls of the building. The original flat roof was changed to a pitched roof. All of the wooden walls of the building were redone. The siding and wood were stripped off of the building and new cream tile was put over the original tile.

Built by Morris Terry in 1958, The LaPlace Frostop has become a fixture on Airline Hwy (US 61) in LaPlace, Louisiana. Mr. Terry leased out the restaurant until 1973 when his daughter Evelyn, and her husband Jimmie Toler, took over. Their daughter, Terry, joined her parents as owner-manager after graduating from LSU in 1993. Even though The LaPlace Frostop has completed two renovations, the first in 1981 and again in 1996, it has retained its old-fashioned, drive-in atmosphere. Today, The LaPlace Frostop continues to proudly serve the River Parishes area with our tried and true blend of tasty drive-in treats and local favorites. We just celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2008 and look forward to many more in the years to come.
